The Barbados economy continued its growth trajectory during financial year 2022 – 2023 following a slow rebound from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the previous fiscal period. According of the Central Bank of Barbados July 2023 report, the economy realised a near four percent increase in economic activity by June 2023 compared to prior year. This was spurred primarily by strong tourism receipts during the winter season and supported by growth in the agricultural sector. In the non-traded sectors, the CBB reported growth of 3.2% at the end of June driven by business and other services, construction and wholesale & retail.

Following two years of negative economic growth, occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Barbados economy began to emerge during the period under review with some improvement in the productive sectors. At the end of June 2022, the Central Bank of Barbados reported economic growth of 10.5% compared to the same period in 2021, due in large measure to a rebound in the tourism industry. Concomitantly, was a decline in the unemployment rate to 9% from a high of 17.2% for the period. The relaxation of the COVID-19 protocols aided in the recovery process and assisted the productive sectors in the recommencement of commercial activity, as confidence gradually began to return to consumers.

The financial year 2020 – 2021 can be characterised as the most challenging for the business community in over a generation. This was occasioned by the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19, on the local economy, which crippled the tourism industry, the transportation, distributive and retail sectors, among other areas of economic activity. The Barbados Government instituted several national ‘lockdowns’ during the period, as part of measures to slow the spread of the virus among locals and visitors alike. This was supported by physical distancing protocols, curfews, and the introduction of a remote work regime to assist with mitigating the spread of the disease. On account of the health crisis caused by the pandemic, an economic crisis emerged due to little economic activity among the productive sectors.
